Getting Started with the Cool Conversations Quiz & Traveling-Tutor on your PDA
Go to CCQ Tutorials and Demos

If CCQ is installed on your PDA and ready to go, CLICK HERE.  If you have an HP 2790 iPAQ or comparable device but you do not yet have the CCQ software, you may "Request a CCQ Test Drive" by sending a message to this email address:  testdrive@traveling-tutor.com - let us know your interest in the program and how you would like to consider using it.

If you have gotten the software and you are doing the installation yourself, you may want to watch the "installation movie".  Player controls at the bottom of the display screen will allow you to pause or go back in the movie.  IMPORTANT Note: You will be given the option of installing the various components on your device or to the SD card or other memory area - you may do this with all but the Heather voice program (TtsHeatherStd.CAB) - this must be installed on the DEVICE.

Play Installation movie

You may want to get a copy of our CCQ Introductory Newsletter (click here).

Once you have completed the installation, one step remains before you will be able to download content and synchronize your device.  You must configure it to find the data that you want to work with.  Our basic subscription service gives you access to the library of content listed below by using the different User Names and Passwords listed to synchronize with each of the listed databases.  To set your "CONFIG" file to reach our main CCQ server, follow the instructions at this link:

Set PDA Configuration File

The IP Address in these instructions will bring you to our main server to synchronize with the User Names and Passwords below  (if you need to set this to a school server or some other location, contact your program administrator to get correct IP Address).

You are now ready to use CCQ on the PDA.  To download content, use the student name and password from the list below for the content set you want to use.  These sets represent a sample of the available content in each area.

If you have trouble synchronizing to get new content, first make sure you have a good WI-Fi connection (see notes below) and, if that is not the issue, you will need to check your configuration settings.   This is not difficult if you follow the steps on the page you will find at this link:           Configure PDA Internet Connection

For a complete introduction to using the PDA, take a look at the movie demo:

GETTING STARTED TIPS:

To adjust volume level on PDA after you turn speech engine(s) on from AUDIO tab in the CCQ Traveling-Tutor window, click the SPEAKER icon at the top of PDA screen.

Click Audio tab to display menu and then click Audio ON

Click on Speaker Icon to open volume adjustment control

To SYNCHRONIZE your PDA and load content you must have your Wi-Fi ON unless you are using the PDA in the cradle attached to a computer that is connected to the Internet.  To find out if you do have a wireless connection, click on the Wi-Fi icon at the bottom of the PDA screen.  In the window that opens, if the WI-FI button is GREEN, you are connected.  If not, you will need to tap and open SETTINGS and/or MANAGER use  window to configure or select your Wi-Fi connection.

When you are ready to try the CCQ Traveling-Tutor on your own, here are a list of login ID's to get different sample content sets (you must have CONFIG file set to 207.36.181.187 and Port 80):

Tips for trouble shooting:  Should your device freeze up or begin running too slowly, this can easily be fixed by doing a "soft" reset of the PDA.

Performing a "Soft" Reset
A soft reset stops all running applications, but does not erase any programs or saved data. Be sure to save any unsaved data within a running application before performing a soft reset.
Perform a soft reset to:
  • Stop all running applications
  • Install a new application
  • Restart the Pocket PC if it stops responding
To perform a soft reset:
  1. Locate the recessed Reset button on the bottom of your iPAQ Pocket PC.
  2. Use the stylus to lightly press the Reset button.
The Pocket PC restarts and displays the Today screen.

For convenience, here are a few settings that will be useful:

Click on START and then select SETTINGS.  On the Settings window, select the SYSTEM tab at the bottom of the window.  Now click on the BACKLIGHT icon.  In the first window that opens, UN-check the box that sets a time limit before backlight is turned off.  Then click the BRIGHTNESS tab and boost the backlighting to a level that is comfortable to you.

While reading e-books, the device will run without interruption if plugged in with the AC adapter.

A FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS section will be added soon.

Another important aspect of our CCQ software is that it works on all Microsoft operating systems, including desktop computers, laptops, pocket computers (“PDA”) and other handheld devices. This offers a significant market advantage for CCQ as the use of handheld devices emerges as an effective education tool. The best results with technology in education appear to be situations where there is a one-to-one relationship between the student and the computer. PDA’s and other handheld devices offer portability and significantly lower costs making them ideal for students, many of whom are already familiar and comfortable with portable gaming devices. CCQ allows teachers to select from a large library of questions and customize their content on a PC and then export those study materials to other Pac’s and PDA’s for use by students. With CCQ the spoken content is not limited to the desktop. PDA’s running CCQ will speak in multiple languages just like the PC version. Utilizing the Microsoft™ Speech Engine in conjunction with the proprietary ISS software gives a voice with a personality to the computer. Ziff Davis’ e-Week Magazine stated “Cool C Talking Computer software is a good demonstration of how far speech recognition has come ... one of the first applications to use Microsoft Corp.'s Microsoft Speech Engine to bring speech recognition and interaction capabilities to user." No network is required but the system can operate easily within traditional hardwired and wireless networks.
